I See Clearly Now

I am staying honest with myself now.
That is the part that changes everything.

Because once you stop lying to yourself,
It becomes harder for anyone else
to sell you a version of the truth
That does not sit right in your spirit.

I call it out like a violin—
sharp, precise, impossible to ignore.

Just because you do not want to hear the truth,
just because you do not want to stand in it,
does not give you permission
to call me a liar.

Honesty is my best friend on speed dial,
And clarity already has the receipts.

I used to give people the benefit of the doubt
until the doubt needed its own apartment,
a parking space,
and a monthly bill.

Not anymore.

Now, I listen differently.
I watch the tone,
the timing,
the little pauses,
the story that keeps changing
But somehow, it still wants me to feel guilty.

And I say to myself,
Hmm. Interesting.

That “interesting” has saved me
more times than I can count.

Because when something does not feel right,
I no longer shrink my knowing
to make someone else comfortable.

I see clearly now.

And that, beloved, it
is a different kind of freedom–
