Friendship No Longer Lives Here

It was a sudden betrayal,
a fracture beneath
the velvet stillness
of an unsuspecting night.

You came disguised
in the familiar garments
of protection, trust, and loyalty.

How beautifully convincing.

Until the illusion shattered
like gunfire against a windshield,
only this time,
the glass belonged to my heart.

And there it was,
pulsating beneath the weight
of a truth I never imagined
I would have to reconcile.

Like molasses moving
along the banks of the ancient Nile,
the sweetness of what I believed
grew heavy
with the residue of deception.

Yet you failed to recognize
the ancestral wisdom
standing quietly
behind my eyes.

Years may linger between us,
but time does not absolve betrayal,
nor does familiarity
constitute integrity.

There is a fine line
between mystery and fiction,
between devotion and duplicity,
between the person
you profess to be
and the character
your conduct reveals.

And let us be candid, beloved.

No eloquent justification
can adjudicate innocence
when the evidence
has already spoken.

I honored my part
of the engagement.

I offered candor,
consistency,
and the quiet fortitude
of genuine friendship.

I did not expect perfection.

I expected integrity.

Instead, you returned
to the antiquated comforts
of familiar habits,
mistaking my grace
for an inexhaustible invitation
to begin again.

How peculiar
that those who speak most fervently
of loyalty
can become so careless
with the trust
placed in their hands.

The most disheartening revelation
was never your imperfection.

It was the illusion of change
you allowed me to believe
had finally become truth.

And that, perhaps,
is where the deepest sorrow lives.

Not in the departure,
but in the disillusionment.

In recognizing
that someone once held
in profound esteem
could so readily relinquish
the very principles
that made the relationship sacred.

I will not pretend
the years meant nothing.

There was laughter.
There was tenderness.
There were conversations
that carried us
through seasons
neither of us
could have anticipated.

Those moments were real
to me.

And that is precisely
why this ending hurts.

But nostalgia
cannot resurrect integrity,
and affection
cannot restore
what repeated deception
has rendered irreparable.

So here we are,
at the precipice
of an irrevocable goodbye.

No rancor.

Only the cogency
of a woman
whose discernment
has finally reconciled
what her heart
was reluctant to accept.

Friendship
no longer lives here.

I grieve the person
I believed you were.

I grieve the trust
that once rested
so comfortably between us.

But I will not grieve
at the expense
of my own vitality.

I wish you healing.

The kind that requires
accountability
rather than applause.

The kind that asks you
to examine the patterns
you continue to perpetuate,
rather than disguise
their consequences
as unfortunate circumstances.

For the tragedy
is not simply
that you lost my trust.

It is that you were offered
something genuine
and failed to recognize
the responsibility
of preserving it.

As for me,
I shall continue
with my dignity intact,
my ancestral wisdom awakened,
and my heart
still capable of love.

I release you
without relinquishing
the truth.

And while the sadness
may linger
like the final tide
beneath an autumn moon,
I understand something now
with exquisite clarity.

The end of our friendship
does not diminish
the sincerity
with which I entered it.

Nor does your betrayal
invalidate
the love,
the loyalty,
or the integrity
I brought into the room.

You may have broken
the bond,

but you did not break
the woman
who offered it.

So I close this chapter
without rancor,
without embellishment,
and without the slightest desire
to revisit
what has already revealed itself.

Farewell.

May the healing
you so desperately need
begin with the honesty
you could not offer me.

And may you someday understand
that the greatest loss
was never my departure,

but the extraordinary gift
of genuine friendship
you failed to cherish
while it was still yours.
